How to Stop Drinking Alcohol

Friendly, sensible, professional help

If you want help with an alcohol problem, I can give you the expert treatment you need, when you need it, without you having to admit yourself to a clinic or talk in a group.

Unlike many private services, I don't use the 12-step programme used in Alcoholics Anonymous. You can read about my treatment style here

Home Alcohol Detoxification Services

My home alcohol detox service is available across all of England & Wales. Medication, monitoring, psychological help, support and aftercare planning are all included. I provide all services personally, and never use agency staff.

My detox - which is based on the most up-to-date national guidelines - is a realistic and affordable alternative to residential rehab, private alcohol clinics and NHS services.

Detox for people with moderate to severe dependence

"I drink all day to stop sweating and shaking"

A home alcohol detox is suitable for people with severe alcohol dependence - typically people who drink all day to stop withdrawals - as long as you're well enough for detox to be safe and effective. To find out if you're likely to need a full medicated alcohol detox, try my online Severity of Alcohol Dependence Questionnaire.

You can read more about my detox service here, or look at how much it's likely to cost here.

Detox for people with mild dependence

"I'm alright at work, but I seem to have to drink every evening"

I see many people who don't drink all day, but are used to drinking too much in the afternoons or evenings, often after they finish work. Whilst you may not have the most severe withdrawals, sometimes the 'rebound' symptoms of irritability and insomnia make cravings for alcohol intolerably intense. In these cases, a short customised regimen of prescribed detox medication, with some structured preparation and support, can make enough difference to help you succeed.

Stopping drinking without medication

"I'm OK, but I worry I'm drinking too much"

I also help many people who aren't drinking so heavily that they need a detox, but who want advice on how they can plan to stop drinking alcohol, and stay stopped. Sometimes this is a one-off appointment with some email, telephone or Skype follow-up, sometimes it's a number of sessions. I usually use my consulting room in Exeter for these appointments, and people travel from all over the country to see me.

When drinking is mixed in with lots of other problems

"There's all sorts going on, and my drinking probably isn't helping"

Many people have all sorts of difficulties, and drinking's just one of them. Often people feel trapped as they're drinking to ease the stress, but of course alcohol's actually making things worse. It's almost always worth starting to untangle things by trying to stop drinking for a while until you resolve your other problems. In particular, I see people with anxiety, low mood and family problems where alcohol is a feature. With a background in mental health as well as addiction, I'm well placed to help you.

Help after detox - aftercare

All my detox plans include some form of post-detox support that suits you. If you've already stopped drinking, but want some help and advice to stay stopped, then I can provide a range of services to help you.

Not sure what you need?

If you don't know what to do, it may be useful to book a one-off assessment & planning session with me. I often do these appointments with the client and their partner, other family members or a friend. We can talk through all aspects of your drinking, and come up with a range of different options and possible ways forward. At the end you'll have a much clearer idea of the next steps you can take to a better way of living, which may or may not involve further help from me.

If you can visit me in my consulting room in Exeter, the fee for this is £120. Alternatively, you can invite me to visit you at home: I'll agree a fee for this with you on the telephone.

Who am I?

I've been a specialist nurse in drug & alcohol dependence since 1994. I trained as a psychiatric nurse in 1989 after graduating in psychology. In 2007 I started my own single-handed private practice specialising in treating clients with alcohol dependence. You can check my professional registration here, and read more about me here.

Integrity and Honesty

I value my professionalism above all else.

I only take on work which I believe will be safe and effective. If I suggest another service to you I never accept a referral fee or commission from that service; I never pay a referral fee or commission to other services or agents.
