Teaching & Training

I can offer teaching and training on a range of topics, including:

• Basic alcohol and/or drug awareness
• The medical and psychological aspects of alcohol / drug use
• Understanding the different treatments available in addiction
• How treatment works

I can of course provide teaching to your exact needs, including matching to DANOS competencies if that's important to you.

I like to encourage questions and discussion throughout any presentation (size of group permitting), and meet any training objectives you set whilst still allowing interesting & discursive group conversations. I only use Powerpoint to illustrate complex concepts, diagrams and a very few bullet points. There's nothing worse than somebody reading out slide after slide in a dull monotone.

I'm not keen on tricksy training exercises ñ I always want to go to any teaching session hoping that somebody will explain things to me that I didn't know. I will certainly never put anybody in a difficult position (like role play), and I won't ever say 'I'm going to get you to do some work now', before making people break into small groups and write things on large bits of paper. As someone once said ñ beware any session that says 'wear comfortable clothes'.

I like to think I'm a bright, engaging, entertaining and knowledgable teacher. My material is all my own work, is based on current good practice, and is illustrated by a range of experiences from my career.

I've taught a diverse range of people in the past ñ doctors, medical students, volunteer counsellors, supported accommodation landlords & business groups.

Free Training

If you're a not-for-profit organisation, I am willing to consider providing free training if I can promote my service by bringing leaflets, using my logo in presentations, and briefly explaining my services at the start and finish.

Fees

My fees are £75 per hour plus expenses for 1-2 hours. Please contact me for the cost of half or whole day training.
