Step by step guide to detox and counselling

What happens?

For some people, not knowing what to expect from my services can stop them from taking the leap. It’s the fear of the unknown. That’s why I like to be as open as possible with all my clients. I’ll let you know exactly what to expect & when to expect it.

Get in touch

The first step is to ring me. My number is 0800 954 0677. This is free, confidential and places you under no obligation. At this point I can offer you general advice, direct you to the most appropriate services for you and, if it’s the right thing to do, arrange for me to come to your home (or somewhere suitable) for full assessment and treatment.

Deciding what’s best for you

If you experience withdrawal symptoms when you don’t drink, it is more likely that we’ll opt for detox. You can take my alcohol dependence questionnaire here to get a good idea of how severe your drinking is.

If we decide to opt for detox…

We’ll decide a date to start as soon as you like. This can often be within days. We’ll also decide what plans we need to make after your detox. We’ll think about your future. Then I’ll prescribe your detox medication. You will stop drinking the night before your first day of detox, not before.

On day one you take your first dose of medication first thing in the morning. You then carry on taking doses four times a day. Each day's total dose will be slightly less than the previous day. I'll visit once or twice a day for the first three days, making sure that the amount I've prescribed for you is safe. I’ll also show how you can minimise any discomfort or cravings. I’ll give you a medication chart. The medication will reduce to zero over 7 to 10 days.

By day four you should be over the worst. Once you're in this second part of the detox, it's a good time to think again about how you can change things so that once you've completed your detox you can stay sober. I'll still visit to help you do this. I’ll also check everything's OK with your health.

At all times I’ll provide telephone support and will breathalyse you when I visit to make sure you haven’t been drinking. This support is very important. People who have specialist support do much better both during and after detox than those who don't.

After your detox

I always offer follow-up appointments as well as unlimited telephone support for three months. This will include lots of advice on how to plan things so that you succeed in the long term. You can always continue seeing me for as long as you want, but there's no obligation.

If you feel it will help we can also discuss using medication like Antabuse or Campral® (Acamprosate) to help you.

If you opt for counselling…

My counselling packages are designed to help you get exactly what you need from my services. There are more details here.

The sessions will help you to plan the best way for you to stop drinking and stay stopped. They also offer ongoing support to help you avoid alcohol and to help you should you relapse.
